Rooney awarded Castrol EDGE Performance of the Month
Wayne Rooney’s virtuoso display against Hull City in the Premier League is the Castrol EDGE Performance of the Month for January 2010.
Castrol Performance Analysts have studied every minute of every match in the top five European leagues and the Champions League and Rooney’s four-goal haul has emerged as the best showing by any player over the last month, scoring 2532 Castrol Rankings points.

The Manchester United striker’s goals capped an impressive all-round display but it was the ruthlessness of his finishing – scoring with each of his four attempts on target – that stood out.

WAYNE ROONEY
It was the first time Rooney has scored four in his career and three of his strikes came in a blistering final 10 minutes of the game. The forward had nine attempts on goal in total, with three off target and two blocked by defenders.

In addition, Rooney completed 80% of his passes and even found time to get back and make one tackle and block a shot from the Tigers, as United moved to the top of the table following this victory.

His scintillating form has made the forward one of the outstanding players of the Premier League season and has helped Rooney break into the top 10 of the Castrol Rankings this month, rising 16 places from 25 to 9.

Castrol Ambassador and former England striker Alan Shearer said: “We have all known about Wayne Rooney’s remarkable talent ever since he broke into the Everton first team at the age of 16. But now, at the age of 24, he has taken his game to new levels and is now ready to be regarded as one of the best players in the world.”

“He has taken on more responsibility at United following Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to Madrid and that seems to have brought out the best in him.”

“At the moment he appears to be absolutely key to United’s hopes of winning the Premier League and reaching a third Champions League final. England coach Fabio Capello will be keeping his fingers crossed Rooney can stay fit until the end of the season.”

“If he arrives in South Africa in this kind of form, he is certain to be one of the stars of the tournament.”

Late goals are a theme running through the top three performances in January 2010.

Once again, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi posted the second-best display of the month, this time with his two-goal display against Sevilla.

Messi’s strikes came in the last 10 minutes and sealed a 4-0 win over the Andalucian side. His goals came from eight attempts in the match, five of which were on target. He racked up 2,150 Castrol Rankings points and that helped the Argentine move up again, this time to the top of the Castrol Rankings.

Chelsea forward Nicolas Anelka’s performance against Sunderland ranked third with the striker netting twice as Carlo Ancelotti’s side cruised to a one-sided 7-2 victory at Stamford Bridge.

The France international had seven attempts on goal, five of those on target, contributed an assist for Chelsea’s final goal, and created four other chances as the Blues made light of the absence of their players at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations™.

The performance earned Anelka 2,057 Castrol Rankings points and helped the forward to move up from 52 to 27 in the Castrol Rankings.
