Mevlut Erding’s hat-trick in Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-1 win against Sochaux in Ligue 1 has earned the striker the Castrol EDGE Performance of the Month for March 2010.
Castrol Performance Analysts have studied every minute of every match in the top five European leagues and the Champions League and
Mevlut Erding’s showing has emerged as the best by any player in a single match played over the last month, scoring 2307 Castrol Rankings points
The Turkey international claimed the first hat-trick of his career with all three goals coming from open play.
In total, Erding, who joined PSG from Sochaux last summer, fired in seven shots, five of which were on target. The forward also demonstrated impressive passing accuracy by successfully completing 22 of his 27 attempted passes, whilst he also delivered three crosses into the box.
The PSG striker, 23, is enjoying the most prolific league campaign of his career with 12 goals already to his name, beating his previous best of 11 with Sochaux in 2007/08 and 2008/09. All 12 of those goals have come from inside the box, confirming Erding’s qualities as an instinctive goalscorer.
Castrol Ambassador and 1998 FIFA World Cup™ winner Marcel Desailly said: “Erding’s game has improved considerably since he joined PSG last summer and he clearly has the potential to become of the best strikers in Ligue 1.
“Natural goalscorers are always highly prized and it was no surprise there were a number of Premier League clubs who were reportedly interested in him last year.
“Erding has that instinct for finding space inside the area and moving into the right areas to anticipate the ball breaking loose. He has good pace, shows great composure in front of goal and is quick to move onto the ball and fire off a shot on goal.
“His goals to games ratio is already nearly one in two and that will improve as he gains more experience. He is definitely one to watch in the future.”
Lionel Messi produced the second best performance of the month when he struck three goals against against Valencia in La Liga, the first of two hat-tricks scored by the in-form Argentine in March.
Messi, ranked number one in the Castrol Rankings, found the target with five of his eight shots and successfully completed nine of eleven dribbles in a display that scored 2258 Castrol Rankings points.
Messi’s international team-mate
Carlos Tevez provided the third best showing when he struck a 12-minute second half hat-trick in Manchester City’s 3-0 win against Wigan Athletic, scoring 2091 Castrol Rankings points.
It was Tevez’s second hat-trick in the Premier League and like Erding, he had seven shots, with five on target. He also completed four of his seven dribbles and earned five free-kicks for his side.
