Messi is the player of the season
No player recorded as many points as the Barcelona wizard in 2010/11, as he finished top scorer in the Champions League for the third consecutive season.
1. Castrol EDGE Rankings leader Lionel Messi (1st) showed his strength by equalling Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record for most goals in a Champions League campaign (12). Over the past 12 months Messi has also made more touches in the opposition half (2665) and completed more dribbles (186) than any other player in the top five European leagues.

2. There are more Spanish players in the top 100 of the Castrol EDGE Rankings (17) than any other nation. Second is Argentina (12) and third is France (9).

3. Robin van Persie remains the top performing Premier League player in the Castrol EDGE Rankings, retaining fifth place for the second successive month. The Arsenal forward scored in each of his final nine league appearances away from home; a Premier League record.

4. Frank Lampard remains the top ranked English player despite falling from ninth to 13th, leaving the Castrol EDGE Rankings top 10 without an Englishman.

5. No player in the top 20 moved more places than Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin; he rose from 36th to 20th. Sahin, who will be playing for Real Madrid next season, created 104 goalscoring chances in the Bundesliga in 2010/11; nobody managed more.

6. Mesut Ozil (47th) is the highest ranked German player outside the Bundesliga. The Real Madrid midfielder created a chance every 22 minutes, the best ratio in the top five European leagues this season.
