Van Persie has record in sight
Arsenal's Dutch striker only has a month left to equal or surpass Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year.
1. Mario Gomez (2nd) has scored 32 goals in 32 league appearances since December 2010 – only Ronaldo (42) and Messi (34) have scored more. His conversion rate of 35% is the highest amongst players with 20 or more league goals.

2. Karim Benzema’s (3rd) Champions League goal ratio is strong, scoring once every 67 minutes in the past 12 months. He has scored nine Champions League goals in as many appearances during that period, boasting a 60% shooting accuracy and has netted seven goals in only 622 minutes of action in La Liga this season.

3. Robin van Persie (4th) has scored 31 league goals in 30 appearances in 2011, leaving him one month to score five goals if he is to match Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year, achieved in 1995.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo (6th) has failed to reproduce his domestic form at continental level in the past 12 months: his minutes-per-goal ratio in the Champions League (one goal every 155 minutes) is nowhere near his Liga form (68).

5. Emmanuel Adebayor (5th) has overtaken Ronaldo (6th) to move into the top five of the Castrol EDGE Rankings. Whilst Ronaldo’s goal tally (40) is higher than his London rival, he has played twice as many minutes in the past twelve months and when averaged out over a 90 minute match, the performances of the pair are very similar.
